Orpheus Lex, an opera by Hindemith’s protégé Marie Nelson Bennett, is a modern version of the classic story set in a mountain retreat in Idaho, where Orpheus, a popular/folk singer, has retired.
In addition to this World Premiere presentation (concert version), composer William Thomas McKinley has chosen the Middle English lay “Sir Orfeo,” a magical, Celtic-influenced recreation of the Orpheus myth, in a startling new work for The New York Virtuoso Singers and Grammy award-winning clarinetist Richard Stoltzman.
